Managing Director’s Trekking Expedition to Uganda

Our Managing Director, Chris Bartram, recently undertook an unforgettable trekking expedition to Uganda, combining long‑haul travel, remote landscapes, and close encounters with some of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife. The journey offered not only remarkable natural experiences but also a deeper appreciation of local culture and environments far removed from everyday business life.

Worth the long journey

The trip began with a demanding international journey from London to Entebbe, travelling via Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) with Ethiopian Airways. After arriving in Uganda, the sense of adventure intensified with a bush plane flight from Entebbe to a remote grass airstrip in Kasese, providing a striking aerial view of the country’s diverse terrain and marking the transition from international travel to true wilderness exploration.

The first significant trekking experience took place in Queen Elizabeth National Park, where Chris observed a large family of approximately 20 chimpanzees in their natural habitat in a deep gorge. Watching these intelligent and social animals interact up close was a powerful experience, highlighting the complexity and energy of life in the rainforest.

The journey then continued to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, renowned for its mountain gorillas and challenging terrain. Over two separate treks, Chris encountered two different gorilla families: one group of 16 individuals and, on another day, a smaller family of just six. The second encounter was particularly memorable, with the gorillas passing extremely close, offering a rare and humbling perspective on these powerful yet gentle animals.

Beyond the primates, the trip yielded numerous additional wildlife sightings. Along the way, Chris observed hyenas, vultures, hippos, baboons, various monkey species, elephants, and lions, each encounter reinforcing the richness and diversity of Uganda’s ecosystems.

Overall, the expedition was demanding, inspiring, and deeply rewarding. It combined physical challenges, remarkable wildlife encounters, and meaningful cultural exchange, making it a truly memorable experience and a powerful reminder of the value of exploration beyond familiar horizons.
