Did you know that at an EU level, the total food waste measured in 2021 was above 58 million tonnes of fresh mass? (https://food.ec.europa.eu/safety/food-waste_en) What a shameful statistic, wouldn’t it be great to help reduce this figure.
Standard analogue expiration dates are typically set very conservatively meaning consumers could be throwing away food that is still well in date and safe for consumption. With the addition of the multitude of different terms used on the packaging no wonder everyone is confused about when it is time to throw food out. With terms like “sell-by”, “use-by”, “best-before”, have you ever considered how much food goes to waste just because of expiration dates? In addition to this, retailers choose to remove products from the shelf that are close to sell-by dates, which also leads to more waste.
One way to fight food waste is to replace traditional, analogue expiry date labels with smart, e-paper-based labels, combined with smart sensors. E-paper based smart labels can be used to dynamically communicate information about the actual state of a product. Smart labels can also alert retailers about products that have not been kept under the right conditions during shipping and transportation, allowing for identifying products that may pose a threat to consumers, before they reach the shelves.
Here are the main benefits of replacing traditional food expiration labels with smart, e-paper based labels:
The advantages of Ynvisible displays is not just power consumption, but rather a combination of various positive properties that our displays bring to the table. Firstly, we do not use glass, the layer thickness is very low at 300 µm, our displays are flexible and therefore mouldable and can be adapted to a cover glass. The power consumption (static power consumption) of 1.67mW/cm2 is naturally low, but only plays a contributory role. The advantage is obvious for battery-operated applications using a button cell, but for industrial applications other advantages are more important. It is therefore the sum of the positive characteristics that tips the balance of our Ynvisible displays, and we only manufacture customised displays bespoke for customers.
In conclusion, the combination of thin and flexible e-paper displays with sensors and electronics in the form of a label provides a powerful way to monitoring product freshness and preventing food waste. As well as details on the consumption date, the labels could also include Real-Time, Dynamic Indicators, Temperature and Humidity Indicators and Gas and Bacteria Indicators.
