Overview

Introduction / Overview

Our client produces dynamic message signs for the transportation industry, with displays mounted above motorways and freeways to provide traffic control and safety information in all weather conditions. These signs must operate without fail in some of the harshest environments, which places equally stringent demands on the locally situated control systems for each overhead sign.

CDS was tasked with delivering a compact, colour display solution with touch functionality to replace an aging Vacuum Fluorescent Display. The goal was to give site engineers faster, easier access to set up, control, and monitor the signage system. Above all, the new display needed to perform reliably across an extreme temperature range—from -40°C to +85°C—without compromise.

Customer / Market Sector

With the customer producing Industrial Transportation Signage, all installations are outdoors and exposed to extreme temperature variations. Although the control boxes housing our displays as part of the control system remain dry and sheltered from direct weather, they can still be located in some of the most inhospitable environments around the world.

Another critical consideration was that these displays would be installed at unmanned, remote sites. Reliability, therefore, was paramount. Visiting site engineers needed to have complete confidence that, upon arrival, the system would be fully operational and performing flawlessly.

Product Used

To meet the project’s requirements, we recommended our 7.0” Smart UART TFT display, featuring a 1024×600 resolution and PCAP touch. The display offers a 6H hardness rating, combined with anti-glare and anti-UV coatings, while a conformal coating on the PCB provides protection for components vulnerable to moisture. Most importantly, it operates reliably across a wide temperature range of -40°C to +85°C—ideal for harsh environments.

Since the display would be housed within a cabinet, a high-brightness solution was not a primary requirement, making the 450 nits of this model perfectly sufficient. Greater priorities were functionality and ruggedness. With a built-in dual-core processor based on Intel’s proven 8051 architecture and 32MB of NOR FLASH memory, system integration is straightforward.

The display communicates via standard UART serial connections, with this model supporting two RS232 ports and one RS485 port. This configuration allows seamless communication with the customer’s embedded platform using basic TX/RX pins, eliminating the need for a separate graphics processor or custom display driver.

Application

Within the customer’s application, the display serves as the Human-Machine Interface (HMI). Featuring a simple, menu-driven interface and touch functionality, it allows site engineers to quickly and easily set up the overhead signage, adjust parameters, and fully interrogate the system for fault diagnosis or maintenance when required.

The Challenge

The major challenge for us on this project was to find the right display solution from our extensive display portfolio that could meet the -40°C~+85°C operating temperature range.  Working closely with our Smart TFT Display partner DWIN we were able to meet the customers’ brief and ultimately find the right display solution from our standard range of displays without the need for any high customization fees.

The CDS Solution

By leveraging our extensive industry knowledge and in-depth understanding of the DWIN Smart TFT Display range, we were able to quickly identify the most suitable solution to meet the project’s requirements.

Working closely with the customer, we carefully reviewed the design brief and developed a clear understanding of the key performance criteria. It soon became evident that the optimal solution lay within our Harsh Environment Smart TFT range, specifically designed to operate reliably across a wide temperature range of -40°C to +85°C.

As these displays are part of our standard product offering, we were able to supply samples promptly, enabling the customer to begin comprehensive testing without delay. This also allowed the early stages of graphical user interface development to commence using the free DGUS development tool, helping to accelerate the overall project timeline.

Results and Benefits

By switching to our 7.0” color Smart UART display solution, we enabled the customer to develop a more intuitive control system that delivers enhanced functionality, simplifies operation, and improves overall system reliability—all while ensuring dependable performance in temperature extremes where other displays would fail.

Why CDS Was the Right Partner

CDS was selected as the ideal partner for this project due to our clear understanding of the customer’s display requirements, as well as the limitations associated with many conventional display technologies. From the outset, it was evident that simply offering an off-the-shelf TFT LCD with PCAP touch would not deliver the performance or reliability needed.

Through early discussions with the customer, we recognised that this application demanded a solution that fully met the specification—without compromise. By taking the time to understand the operating environment and key challenges, we were able to guide the customer towards a more suitable and robust approach.

Working in partnership with DWIN, whose innovative engineering has led to the development of a specialised range of smart displays designed for harsh environments, we are now able to offer intelligent, high-performance TFT solutions capable of operating in extreme conditions. These advancements enable vibrant, feature-rich displays to be deployed in demanding and previously prohibitive environments, opening up new possibilities for a wide range of applications

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a rugged, sunlight-readable, developer-friendly smart display that won’t compromise on performance or ease of integration, our range of Smart TFT displays should be at the top of your list. Built for extreme environments and powered by flexible, intuitive tools, they are the ultimate solution for today’s smart interface needs — whether deployed indoors or out.
