Managing Director’s Trekking Expedition to Uganda

Managing Director’s Trekking Expedition to Uganda Our Managing Director, Chris Bartram, recently undertook an unforgettable trekking expedition to Uganda, combining long‑haul travel, remote landscapes, and close encounters with some of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife. The journey offered not only remarkable natural experiences but also a deeper appreciation of local culture and environments far removed from everyday business life. Click here for a short reel of the experience Worth the long journey The trip began with a demanding international journey from London to Entebbe, travelling via Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) with Ethiopian Airways. After arriving in Uganda, the sense of adventure intensified with a bush plane flight from Entebbe to a remote grass airstrip in Kasese, providing a striking aerial view of the country’s diverse terrain and marking the transition from international travel to true wilderness exploration. The first significant trekking experience took place in Queen Elizabeth National Park, where Chris observed a large family of approximately 20 chimpanzees in their natural habitat in a deep gorge. Watching these intelligent and social animals interact up close was a powerful experience, highlighting the complexity and energy of life in the rainforest. Bespoke Solutions System to create your own solution The journey then continued to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, renowned for its mountain gorillas and challenging terrain. Over two separate treks, Chris encountered two different gorilla families: one group of 16 individuals and, on another day, a smaller family of just six. The second encounter was particularly memorable, with the gorillas passing extremely close, offering a rare and humbling perspective on these powerful yet gentle animals. Beyond the primates, the trip yielded numerous additional wildlife sightings. Along the way, Chris observed hyenas, vultures, hippos, baboons, various monkey species, elephants, and lions, each encounter reinforcing the richness and diversity of Uganda’s ecosystems. Overall, the expedition was demanding, inspiring, and deeply rewarding. It combined physical challenges, remarkable wildlife encounters, and meaningful cultural exchange, making it a truly memorable experience and a powerful reminder of the value of exploration beyond familiar horizons. This strategic step reflects our ongoing commitment to quality, compliance, and performance, particularly in the aerospace, defence, security, and law enforcement sectors, where customer expectations demand the highest operational excellence. As CDS continues to supply advanced industrial and embedded display solutions to critical applications worldwide, aligning with the Joint Supply Chain Accreditation Register (JOSCAR) is a natural evolution of our quality and compliance strategy. What is JOSCAR? JOSCAR (Joint Supply Chain Accreditation Register) is an industry-recognised collaborative tool used by major defence, aerospace, and security primes—including BAE Systems, Leonardo, Rolls-Royce, MBDA, and Thales—to assess and validate suppliers against a unified set of compliance and capability criteria. More than just a box-ticking exercise, JOSCAR ensures that suppliers meet the highest standards of quality, transparency, and risk management. This enables smoother and more efficient procurement processes for buyers and a higher standard of service delivery from approved vendors. Click here for our aerospace displays Why CDS is Pursuing JOSCAR Accreditation At CDS, our embedded displays, rugged panel PCS, touchscreen solutions, and industrial computing technologies are increasingly being specified in mission-critical environments—from military command systems and air traffic control to secure access systems and defence-grade HMIS. Meeting JOSCAR’s Two-Tier Accreditation Criteria The JOSCAR assessment framework is divided into two levels, each designed to assess different aspects of a company’s operations depending on its risk profile and the nature of its supplied products. 🔹 Level 1 – Foundational Company Information At this initial stage, CDS must provide key corporate documentation that includes: Registered company information (name, number, VAT, address) Financial disclosures (e.g., most recent company accounts) Insurance certifications (public, product, employer’s liability, professional indemnity, and cyber where applicable) Foundational policy documents: Health & Safety Policy Environmental Policy Quality Policy Anti-bribery & Corruption Policy Modern Slavery Statement (for businesses with turnover >£36m) This level ensures that CDS meets the minimum professional and ethical standards expected by Tier 1 suppliers and public sector defence organisations. Level 2 – Enhanced Risk-Based Compliance Given our role in providing embedded electronics and displays for use in high-reliability environments, CDS is also preparing for Level 2, which involves submitting evidence across a broader range of categories: ✅ 1. Quality & Assurance We maintain a quality-first approach supported by our ISO 9001:2015 certification, rigorous quality control procedures, and traceability systems. These are essential in ensuring every unit shipped meets both design and durability standards. ✅ 2. Environmental Responsibility CDS is committed to environmental stewardship and sustainable manufacturing practices. We are aligned with ISO 14001 principles and continue to invest in responsible sourcing, waste reduction, and product lifecycle management. ✅ 3. We provide Risk Assessments, Method Statements (RAMS), safety training, and maintain a live H&S management system consistent with industry best practices. ✅ 5. Before establishing CDS, I set up Display Technology Limited, the UK office, for a multinational German group as a minority shareholder. After significant growth from 2002 to 2009, I sold my shareholding back to the German parent company, which provided the funds to establish CDS as a customer-focused company with excellent technical support and customer care. crystal-displaycom-staging.onyx-sites.io/   What’s the company’s background? CDS was founded in 2010 with a management team experienced in the flat panel market since the mid-1990s. Initially, we operated from a modest two-chair, one-room office in Dartford. Over the years, we’ve expanded our product range to include audiovisual screens, industrial displays, touch screens, digital signage, and panel PC interactive touchscreen products. Many blue-chip organisations have specified bus on numerous projects globally for some of the world’s leading brands. https://crystal-displaycom-staging.onyx-sites.io/products/small-format-tft-lcds/   What is your vision for the company?
