High-Brightness Marine Display Solution for On-Deck Vessel Operations
Overview
Introduction
The marine industry presents a unique set of challenges when selecting reliable display technology. Unlike standard commercial environments, marine applications demand equipment capable of withstanding extreme conditions while maintaining consistent performance.
From intense sunlight and saltwater exposure to constant vibration and wide temperature fluctuations, displays used at sea must meet rigorous standards. In many cases, this also includes compliance with internationally recognised certifications such as IEC 60945, which ensures equipment can perform reliably in harsh maritime environments.
This case study explores how a robust outdoor display solution was delivered to meet the demanding requirements of a vessel operating in these conditions.
The Challenge
The customer required a durable, high-performance display to be mounted on the open deck of a vessel. The display would be fully exposed to environmental elements, including:
- Direct sunlight
- Saltwater spray
- Rain
- Wide temperature variations
- Continuous vibration from vessel movement
In addition to these challenges, the solution needed to align with IEC 60945 requirements, ensuring resistance to vibration, temperature extremes, humidity, and electromagnetic interference commonly experienced at sea.
Further technical requirements included:
- Outdoor-rated display with IP66 protection
- High brightness for clear visibility in daylight
- Screen sizes ranging from 32” to 65”
- Support for HDMI signal input
- AC power input compatibility
The display would be used to present critical operational information to the vessel’s crew, making reliability and visibility essential.
The Solution
To meet these requirements, the customer selected CDS’s 55” full IP66 stainless steel LCD display, purpose-built for harsh outdoor and marine environments.
The solution was designed with the demands of IEC 60945 compliance in mind, ensuring robust performance across environmental and operational stress factors typical in maritime applications.
Key features of the solution included:
- 2,500 nits high-brightness panel for excellent readability in direct sunlight
- Optically bonded display, reducing glare and improving contrast
- Protective AG tempered front glass for enhanced durability
- IP66-rated enclosure, ensuring protection against water and dust ingress
- Waterproof connectors for secure, reliable connectivity
- Automatic dimming control, allowing the display to adapt to changing ambient light conditions
- Wide operating temperature range, ensuring consistent performance in extreme climates
Implementation
The 55” display was installed on the vessel’s deck and positioned for optimal visibility during operations. Its rugged, marine grade design allowed for seamless integration without the need for additional protective housing.
The system was configured to display real-time, mission critical data, supporting safe and efficient vessel operation even under continuous exposure to harsh environmental conditions.
