Real-Time Multi-Source Visualisation for Mission-Critical Applications
When your technology is deployed above motorways, reliability isn’t optional—it’s critical.
For manufacturers of dynamic message signs in the transportation industry, every component in the system must perform flawlessly, no matter the conditions. These overhead displays deliver essential, real-time traffic and safety information, often in some of the harshest environments imaginable.
But while the signs themselves are highly visible, the control systems behind them are just as important—and just as exposed to extreme temperatures.
This is where Crystal Display Systems (CDS) stepped in.
The Challenge: Modernising Control in Extreme Conditions
Our customer needed to upgrade an aging Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD) used within their roadside control units. The goal was clear:
- Deliver a modern, colour touchscreen interface
- Improve speed and ease of system interaction for engineers
- Maintain absolute reliability in extreme temperatures
And not just typical industrial conditions—this system needed to operate flawlessly from -40°C to +85°C.
To make matters more demanding, these units are deployed in remote, unmanned locations. Engineers may travel long distances to access them, so failure simply isn’t an option.
The Solution: A Rugged Smart UART TFT Display
After carefully assessing the application, we recommended our 7.0″ Smart UART TFT display, designed specifically for harsh environments.
This wasn’t about overengineering—it was about choosing the right technology for the job.
Key Features:
- 1024 × 600 resolution for clear, intuitive visuals
- PCAP touch functionality for responsive interaction
- Wide operating temperature range: -40°C to +85°C
- 6H surface hardness, with anti-glare and anti-UV coatings
- Conformal-coated PCB for added environmental protection
- 450 nits brightness, ideal for enclosed cabinet use
Under the hood, the display is powered by a dual-core processor based on the 8051 architecture, with integrated memory—allowing it to operate independently without the need for additional graphics hardware.
Seamless Integration, Simplified Design
One of the biggest advantages of this solution lies in its simplicity.
The display communicates via UART serial interface, supporting:
- 2 × RS232
- 1 × RS485
This allowed the customer to integrate the display directly into their existing embedded system using basic TX/RX communication—eliminating the need for:
- External graphics processors
- Complex driver development
- Additional system overhead
The result? A faster development cycle and a more streamlined system architecture.
Application: A Smarter Human-Machine Interface
Within the control unit, the display acts as the Human-Machine Interface (HMI)—the critical touchpoint between engineers and the system.
With a clean, menu-driven interface, engineers can:
- Configure signage quickly
- Adjust system parameters
- Diagnose faults efficiently
- Perform maintenance with confidence
In high-pressure environments, usability matters just as much as durability—and this solution delivers both.
Overcoming the Core Challenge
The biggest hurdle in this project wasn’t functionality—it was temperature performance.
Finding a display that could reliably operate across such an extreme range is no small task. Many standard TFT solutions simply aren’t designed for it.
By working closely with DWIN, we were able to identify a solution from our existing range that met the full specification—without requiring costly custom development.
This meant:
- Faster turnaround times
- Reduced development costs
- Immediate access to samples for testing
Using DWIN’s DGUS development tool, the customer was also able to begin GUI development early, accelerating the entire project timeline.
The Results: Reliability Meets Usability
By upgrading to a 7.0″ Smart UART TFT display, the customer achieved:
- A more intuitive and modern control interface
- Improved system reliability in extreme environments
- Simplified integration and reduced hardware complexity
- Faster setup, diagnostics, and maintenance for engineers
Most importantly, the system now performs consistently in conditions where many conventional displays would fail.
Why CDS?
This project highlights what sets CDS apart.
We didn’t just supply a display—we:
- Took the time to understand the full application environment
- Identified the limitations of standard solutions
- Recommended a fit-for-purpose technology
- Delivered a solution that balanced performance, cost, and speed to market
By combining our engineering expertise with strong partnerships, we enable our customers to push the boundaries of where display technology can be deployed.
Extreme environments demand more than just robust hardware—they require smart, well-matched solutions.
If your application involves:
- Harsh temperatures
- Remote or unmanned installations
- Demanding industrial conditions
Then a standard display simply won’t cut it.
CDS’s Smart TFT range is built to thrive where others fail—delivering reliability, simplicity, and performance in equal measure.
