Case Study: How CDS Delivered a Perfect Display Retrofit for an Outdoor Kiosk Manufacturer

When a customer came to CDS for a reliable Optically Bonded PCAP Touch solution for their outdoor kiosk

When an outdoor kiosk manufacturer needed to retrofit two TFT LCDs into their existing kiosks, they turned to Crystal Display Systems (CDS) for a reliable, high-performance solution. The task was more complex than it initially appeared, with unique requirements for display size, performance, and environmental durability. Here’s how CDS tackled the challenge and delivered a tailored solution.

The Customer's Challenge

The customer needed two displays to fit into an existing kiosk design without altering the external structure. The displays had to be installed on-site and perform reliably in outdoor environments, facing sunlight, temperature extremes, and potential wear and tear.

Key requirements included:

  • Display sizes: 7.0” (1024×600) and 15.6” (1920×1080)
  • Interfaces: LVDS for the display and USB for the PCAP touch
  • Durability: High brightness for sunlight readability and a wide operating temperature range (-30°C to +85°C)
  • Longevity: A guaranteed 10-year product lifecycle

Our Initial Assessment

Our team quickly recognized that achieving optimal performance in an outdoor setting required more than just high brightness. To ensure readability, durability, and reliable touch performance, we focused on:

  • High-brightness LED backlights (minimum 1000 cd/m²)
  • High contrast ratios for sharp visuals
  • Wide viewing angles (80° in all directions)
  • Optical bonding to minimize reflections and improve clarity
The Tailored Solution

After careful evaluation, we identified two displays from our trusted partner, Startek, that met almost every specification. The only sticking point was the touch interface: the standard I²C interface needed to be replaced with USB.

7.0” Display Solution

  • IPS TFT LCD (16:9 aspect ratio)
  • Optically bonded PCAP touch
  • LVDS interface with USB touch
  • 1024×600 resolution
  • 1600 cd/m² brightness, 1000:1 contrast ratio
  • Wide viewing angles (80°/80°/80°/80°)
  • Operating temperature: -30°C to +85°C

15.6” Display Solution

  • IPS TFT LCD (16:9 aspect ratio)
  • Optically bonded PCAP touch
  • LVDS interface with USB touch
  • 1920×1080 resolution
  • 1300 cd/m² brightness, 1100:1 contrast ratio
  • Wide viewing angles (85°/85°/85°/85°)
  • Operating temperature: -30°C to +85°C
Custom Engineering for the Perfect Fit

To address the USB requirement, we collaborated with our suppliers to design a semi-custom solution:

  • Developed a new touch FPC with an integrated USB controller
  • Opted for a reliable touch controller IC

While this required a small Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE) fee and a Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ), the investment was well within the customer’s budget.

Additionally, for the 15.6” display, we provided a lightweight aluminium frame to simplify installation.

Seamless Project Execution

CDS took charge of the entire project, coordinating with suppliers and managing timelines to ensure a smooth process. By centralizing the project through a single supplier, we minimized potential delays and communication issues.

The Results: A Smooth Retrofit and Satisfied Customer

The project concluded successfully, with both displays delivered on time and retrofitted seamlessly into the kiosks. The customer now benefits from:

✅ High-performance, sunlight-readable displays

✅ Durable components with a guaranteed 10-year lifespan

✅ A retrofit solution executed without modifying the kiosk structure
