Custom PCAP 10.4" BAR Type Display

Our client, a prominent supplier and developer of HMI systems had a challenging task to find a wide format TFT LCD with a height very similar to a 1U rack.  The display also had to incorporate PCAP touch with a custom black cover lens giving the “only seen when on” effect, plus safety measures to prevent accidental damage to the user’s fingers in the event of critical damage to the glass display & touch assembly. 

With our extensive TFT LCD portfolio we were able to offer a standard 10.4” Bar Type TFT with a 1024(RGB) x 100 resolution, high brightness display with outline dimensions of 288.92(H) x 41.5(V)mm. With the display approved by the customer we then had the challenge of adding a PCAP touch with a customized shaped cover lens, the “only seen when on” characteristic plus the safety feature. 

With the industry’s relatively new requirement for “only seen when on” we had to ensure that the level of light from the display’s backlight was not completely blocked by the black PCAP cover lens.  By using a green glass cover lens and optically bonding the touch to the TFT using a black SCA optical glue we were able to create the customer’s desired “only seen when on” effect but still managing to maintain a good level of light output from the displays backlight.  To prevent the touch cover lens from shattering and potentially causing a nasty cut to fingers etc. we adhered an anti-ballistic film with anti-glare properties to the touch cover lens ensuring that any slivers of broken glass could not cause any damage.

By using the optical bonding technology, we effectively eliminated the chance of condensation within the display assembly and optimised the displays reduced output through the black lens
