What are InShell UART TFT Displays?

DWIN’s UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter) TFT displays are a type of colour TFT LCD that communicate directly with a microcontroller or microprocessor through a UART interface. UART is one of the most common communication protocols, and it is widely supported by almost all microprocessors and microcontrollers The UART protocol allows these displays to be easily integrated into systems without requiring complex parallel interfaces, which are common with traditional TFT displays.

Why a Smart UART TFT Display?

For many existing applications, it is unnecessary to upgrade your microprocessor as most will have at least one UART port. A UART TFT display when connected via UART uses no major microprocessor resources. 

How do these DWIN UART displays work?

UART Communication (TX, RX)

  • TX: The transmit pin (from the perspective of the device sending data).
  • RX: The receive pin (from the perspective of the device receiving data).

UART communication is asynchronous, meaning that no clock signal is needed. Data is sent as a series of bytes over the TX pin of the microcontroller to the RX pin of the display, and vice versa for receiving.

Our panel mount InShell UART display range presents OEM product designers ready-made solutions for a host of industrial HMI applications.  The display’s shell has an IP65 fascia, designed to prevent the ingress of moisture, dust and dirt making them the ideal choice for products within industrial and medical markets where the front of the display may need to be cleaned of contaminants at the end of the working day.  The range starts at a 4.3” 800×480 resolution size and goes all the way up to a 15.0” 1024×768 XGA size and encompasses all the key display sizes in-between.  All models feature an integrated projected capacitive or resistive touch sensor, providing touch-based interaction as well as protection for the display.  

UART communication displays for industrial markets

At the heart of these UART Displays is a dual-core processor based on the ever popular and stable intel 8051 architecture, plus DWIN’s own powerful development software, DGUS. The DGUS design tool allows system designers to build their graphical user interface including touch functionality, images, fonts and music files can also be simply imported from popular software programmes and used to create your dynamic GUI, vastly reducing the development time. Your GUI can be quickly and simply transferred to the UART Display’s FLASH memory via SD card or an RS232 comm port.  Communication to your application’s microprocessor is via the display’s RS232 or RS485 integrated UART interfaces, connection to a PLC using ModBus protocol is also supported.
